Wow, half a million views?
I experienced audio systems worth well over $1,000,000 at AXPONA (Audio Expo North America). The original project stemmed from curiosity to expand the knowledge bubble of my normal bluetooth speaker reviews. So I darted up to Schaumburg, IL with my trusty Sony A7SIII and my tripod. Obviously, sharing audio over youtube would be impossible, but it was a fun reason to build a narrative around the sheer opulence and monetary audacity of these sytems. I had to be very careful not to get pulled into too many “snake oil” sales pitches that were abundant at the convention.
The edit took about 3 weeks to complete, with several screenings before hand to see where interest would fall off. I accomplished this by side eyeing my sister and her family’s kids as they sat there on the couch watching. What I learned from this was - you’ve got to get into the details quick. There’s no patience for building the scene with youtube videos - something I take great joy in.
My standard video retention is about 30-40% viewership left after the first 40 seconds. Those 40 seconds are where the intro lives. If you think about what an intro really does, it’s setting someone up for a cold open who is not immediatley familiar with the territory. I’m not saying you don’t need them on youtube, but there is no tolerance for any second of unecessary content. I tried my best to honor a brief intro, but viewership still fell off quite fast. However, with almost 500,000 views in the first weeks, I guess I did something right.
